About Us
CoffeeB is a new, sustainable coffee capsule system without capsules that offers excellent coffee quality and produces no waste. It works with unique, single-serve coffee balls that are entirely of natural origin and compostable. The coffee quality in the cup is guaranteed thanks to the patented brewing technology and the range of high-quality coffees available from the Café Royal brand.
Delica AG was founded in 2021 through the merger of Chocolat Frey AG, Delica AG, Midor AG, Riseria SA and Total Capsule Solutions. The name Delica stands for the highest possible expertise in great-tasting products under the Migros Industrie umbrella. Delica employs about 2500 people at five locations across Switzerland and many offices abroad. Our company develops and produces delicious top-quality chocolate, snacks, cooking products and coffee.
Delica stands for innovation, sustainability, and Swiss origin, thanks in part to our Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler. The issue of capsule waste (100,000 tons of capsule waste annually worldwide) has concerned us for many years. As portion-controlled coffee becomes increasingly popular in Germany and globally, capsule waste continues to grow. Therefore, alongside our efforts to maximize recycling rates, we have spent the last five years developing a completely waste-free, portion-controlled coffee system. We are proud to have developed CoffeeB in collaboration with our internal R&D department and external partners. This innovative capsule-free system delivers the highest quality standards with a plant-based Coffee Ball that contains neither aluminum nor plastic.
Based on the philosophy of Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler, Delica stands for innovative drive, sustainability and Swiss origins.
The issue of capsule waste (globally 100,000 tonnes of capsule waste per year) has concerned us for many years. The global growth of single-serve coffee entails more capsule waste. For this reason, in addition to attempting to maximise the recycling percentage, we have, over the past five years, also been working on developing a completely waste-free, single-serve coffee system. In collaboration with our internal R&D department, CoffeeB was created: an innovative capsule system without capsules for the highest quality demands, with a coffee ball of completely natural origin that contains neither aluminium nor plastic.
Since the largest portion of the carbon footprint comes from the coffee itself, a brewing method that uses as little coffee as possible or handles coffee as efficiently as possible is recommended. Portion systems generally excel at this. With fully automatic machines, espresso machines, or filter coffee (e.g., Bialetti/coffee pots), it's particularly important to keep coffee quantities low and ensure the brewed coffee is actually consumed. CoffeeB guarantees never to use too much coffee. With 5.7 to 6.2 grams of coffee per cup, the system is extremely efficient and correspondingly resource-friendly. Additionally, plastics and/or aluminum for casings are eliminated, along with associated processes related to production, disposal, and recycling.
Thanks to our patented technology that is unique in the world, the coffee balls can only be used with the CoffeeB machine. We are keen to counteract excessive consumption and support sustainable, forward-looking consumption. We therefore only recommend purchasing a new machine if the current one needs replacing. A coffee machine has an average life cycle of roughly four years. This means that there are annual changes within the coffee world. We would like to address the 20-25% of consumers who are looking for a new machine.
Biodegradable capsules usually contain plastic made from renewable raw materials and are only industrially compostable. Coffee Balls, however, are garden-compostable and decompose into valuable humus within a maximum of 12 weeks. Compared to home-compostable cellulose capsules, Coffee Balls offer the full flavor experience. The protective layer of Coffee Balls contains no plastic, aluminum, or paper and forms an oxygen barrier comparable to aluminum, protecting against aroma loss. With Coffee Balls, only the coffee grounds including the organic shell remain, so they can be easily disposed of in home compost or organic waste bins. The best capsule is indeed a capsule without a capsule.
As the largest proportion of the footprint comes from the coffee itself, we recommend using a preparation method that uses as little coffee as possible or makes use of the coffee as efficiently as possible. In general, single-serve systems serve this purpose very well. When using fully automatic machines, portafilters or filters (e.g. Bialetti/coffee pots), one must pay attention to keeping the coffee quantity low and to actually consuming the coffee that was prepared.
CoffeeB will never use too much coffee. Using an average of 5.7 grams of coffee per cup, the system is highly efficient and, hence, resource-saving. What’s more, no plastic and/or aluminium components are used for the wrapper, thereby removing the corresponding steps in terms of production, waste disposal and recycling.
CoffeeB is the name of the coffee system, whereas the coffee is from Café Royal. Café Royal stands for high-quality and sustainable coffee that our customers know and love.
You can find both our delicious Coffee Balls and our stylish coffee machine in Migros stores!
Our opinion: The best capsule is no capsule at all! With CoffeeB, the production and eventual disposal of a capsule is eliminated. This saves additional transport routes, processes, and waste.
Sustainability
Our ball carton is made from FSC-certified natural products such as birch, sawdust, and spruce. The barrier layer in the box consists of polypropylene and protects the coffee balls from oxygen, steam, and loss of flavour. This guarantees the product’s shelf life. Our cover film, which acts as aroma protection for the coffee balls, consists of composite materials made from paper and plastic. Our banderole consists of printed, FSC-certified paper with water-based glue.
Compared to conventional capsule systems, CoffeeB operates completely without aluminum or plastic capsules. All components of the Coffee Ball are plant and mineral-based and garden-compostable. Accordingly, CoffeeB can massively reduce aluminum and plastic waste.
The largest portion of the carbon footprint in coffee preparation comes from the coffee itself. Therefore, a brewing method that uses as little coffee powder as possible is recommended, as is generally the case with portion systems. Other systems like fully automatic machines, espresso machines, or filter coffee use significantly more coffee per cup, making their ecological footprint higher.
The production of Coffee Balls takes place in Switzerland. The ingredients for the protective layer surrounding the coffee are of plant and mineral origin and are produced in Europe. For transporting our CoffeeB machine to Switzerland, we rely exclusively on rail and ship transport.
CoffeeB is the world’s first capsule system that works entirely without capsules, thereby producing no capsule waste. This is made possible by our Coffee Balls — small balls made from pressed coffee, coated with a fine protective layer of natural origin, free from aluminium or (bio-)plastic. The Coffee Ball is therefore home-compostable and can be returned to the natural cycle.
On average, coffee capsule machines have a lifespan of 4 years. This means that every year, 20–25% of the population will purchase a new coffee machine. From a sustainability perspective, we specifically want to target these consumers for our CoffeeB system.
In general, portioned systems perform better in CO₂ footprint studies than fully automatic machines or portafilter machines, as the amount of coffee used has a major impact on the footprint — and those other systems work with significantly larger quantities of coffee. CoffeeB uses only about 5.7 g to 6.2 g of coffee per ball. This means coffee — a precious resource — is used extremely efficiently.
Our entire CoffeeB by Café Royal range is certified with either the Rainforest Alliance seal or a combination of Organic and Fairtrade. Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade place great emphasis on ensuring a safe, stable, and sustainable income for coffee producers. A key focus of the Rainforest Alliance is improving farming methods to enable higher income. In addition, Fairtrade guarantees minimum prices and a fixed premium to producers, who must be organised in cooperatives. By covering our entire range with one of these certifications, we aim to ensure better prices for coffee farmers.
We have had a greenhouse gas balance prepared by an external consultancy. Climate balances must be calculated with many general values and assumptions, especially when comparing with competitors. For this reason, we are currently not distributing the document. However, we are happy to invite relevant stakeholders for a joint review.
Since the largest share of the footprint comes from the coffee itself, a preparation method that uses as little coffee as possible — or uses coffee as efficiently as possible — is recommended. Portion systems generally do this very well. With fully automatic machines, portafilter machines, or filter coffee (e.g., Bialetti/moka pot), it is particularly important to keep the coffee quantity low and to ensure the brewed coffee is actually consumed. CoffeeB never uses too much coffee. With 5.7 to 6.2 grams of coffee per cup, the system is extremely efficient and thus resource-friendly. In addition, plastics and/or aluminium for the casing are eliminated, as well as the associated production, disposal, and recycling processes.
Our CoffeeB by Café Royal Coffee Balls are made from the same delicious, 100% Rainforest Alliance certified coffee used in our Café Royal capsules.
All the CoffeeB by Café Royal coffee we source is Rainforest Alliance certified. You can recognize the certification by the little green frog on the packaging. This seal indicates that the certified product or one of its ingredients has been produced using methods that support the three pillars of sustainability - social, economic and environmental. To achieve this, our coffee farmers undergo a rigorous certification program that commits them to continuous improvement, training in sustainable business practices, and a clearly identifiable benefit to the producer.
Machine
This sign lights up when the containers with the coffee balls and residual water must be emptied.
The container sign will usually start flashing after about nine coffee balls. The machine stops and no more coffee can be prepared. If several rinsing cycles were performed, this button may already light up earlier because the drip tray may be too full.
The machine has been programmed to reset the counting mechanism eight seconds after removing the container. Once the container is empty and has been reinserted in the machine, the light extinguishes and you can prepare coffee again.
If the rinsing button lights up blue, the water tank is empty.
To refill the water tank:
- Remove the water tank and fill it with water.
- Put the water tank back into position - pushing it firmly into the holder.
- Close the lever.
- Press the blue rinsing button.
- Did the blue button light up again? Press the blue button again.
- The coffee will now be brewed.
- All buttons should now light up white again.
First, remove the container from the coffee machine and dispose of the Coffee Balls (e.g., in the compost or organic waste). Then empty the water from the (main) container and drip tray. Reassemble everything and insert the container back into the machine.
Note: Only the Coffee Ball container is dishwasher-safe! The machine will not operate if the container is not inserted, and the container signal will light orange. The stainless-steel cup rest is not fixed to the drip tray and may fall off.
Videos on “Get Started” and “Coffee Preparation” showing how to empty the containers can be found on the product page for your machine in our webshop.
If your CoffeeB coffee machine is damaged, you can return it to be repaired. CoffeeB coffee machines that were purchased in the CoffeeB online shop or in a Migros or Melectronics store can be returned to the Customer Service department at all Migros stores for repair.
CoffeeB coffee machines that were purchased at a Fust store can be returned to a Fust branch for repair.
The dispensing quantity can be adjusted for each cup of coffee. The default setting for espresso is 40 ml and for lungo 110 ml. You can choose between a dispensing quantity of 25-250 ml.
To program the cup:
- Place a cup underneath the coffee spout.
- Check that the water tank level is sufficient. If not, refill the water tank.
- Insert the coffee ball and close the operating lever.
- Press the button to be programmed for at least three seconds until it flashes three times in quick succession.
- Release the button. The coffee flows into the cup.
As soon as the desired quantity has been reached, press the button to be programmed again. The coffee stops flowing and all buttons light up. The new quantity has been programmed.
If little to no water flows from the spout during rinsing or brewing, or if the lever is blocked, this may indicate the machine is clogged.
If a Coffee Ball is stuck:
1. Unplug the machine.
2. Remove the ball container at the front.
3. Place a cup under the coffee outlet.
4. Use a flashlight to check where the ball is jammed.
5. Carefully push the ball through the machine with a spoon.
6. Plug the machine back in.
7. Push the lever down and press the rinse button.
8. The machine is now ready for use again.
In this video tutorial, we'll show you how to start up the Globe:
We’re delighted you’ve chosen a CoffeeB machine.
To unpack your machine, follow these steps:
1. Place the carton containing your new machine on a flat surface.
2. Open the two marked flaps at the bottom of the packaging with both hands.
3. Lift the carton straight up to remove it from the machine.
4. The machine accessories are located underneath the machine.
After brewing about 9–10 coffees, the container is full and the container indicator lights orange.
Emptying is easiest if you pull the container straight forward along with the drip tray. Alternatively, grip it with both hands at the lower third and pull it straight out.
It is recommended to first remove and empty the Coffee Ball collection container, then empty the wastewater container.
Note: The container must be removed from the machine for at least 8 seconds to reset the container display.
If two fresh Coffee Balls fall into the ball slot, the brewing unit can still be closed. The first ball will be brewed, while the second ball will be pushed up and remain in the opening above the closed brewing unit.
If you have tweezers, you can try to remove it.
After brewing, the first ball will fall into the collection container, and the second ball will drop into the brewing unit, where it can then be used.
If you prefer to remove the ball beforehand, simply press it down with your finger so it falls into the container.
Important: Remove the ball immediately so it does not get wet and can be used later.
If the cleaning button flashes red while brewing coffee, the machine needs to be descaled.
To descale your machine, please follow these steps:
1. Fill the water tank with one bottle of CoffeeB descaler (0.5 L). If using a different coffee machine descaler, follow the manufacturer’s dosage instructions. Warning: Only use coffee machine descalers — do not use vinegar or degreasing agents.
2. Remove the Coffee Ball dispenser, close the ball slot lid, and keep it closed until the descaling process is complete.
3. Push the lever down and keep it closed during the entire descaling process.
4. Press and hold both the Lungo (large cup symbol) and cleaning button simultaneously for at least 3 seconds.
5. The “Container” indicator will flash red. Remove the container for at least 8 seconds, empty it, and reinsert it.
6. Remove the drip tray by pulling it upwards at an angle. Place a container with at least 1 L capacity under the coffee outlet.
7. Press the cleaning button (now lit purple). The descaling process will start. The espresso cup button will light, and the cleaning button will flash during the process. After 25 minutes, the process will finish, and the lever will move up automatically. The cleaning button will light purple.
8. Rinse the water tank, fill it with at least 0.5 L of water, and reinsert it.
9. Empty your collecting container and place it back under the coffee outlet.
10. Push the lever down and press the cleaning button. The rinse cycle will start — the cleaning button will flash purple, and the Lungo button will light up. After three minutes, the cycle will finish, and the lever will move up. The “Container” indicator will flash.
11. Remove the container for at least 8 seconds, empty it, and reinsert it. The cleaning button will light blue. Fill the water tank and reinsert it.
12. Press the cleaning button. All buttons will light up — the machine is ready for use.
Note: Do not interrupt the descaling process by unplugging the power cable. To stop the process, press both the cleaning and Lungo buttons simultaneously. If you have already used descaler, ALWAYS rinse with at least 0.5 L of water afterwards.
Watch our video tutorial to learn how to descale your machine:
Before first use, the dispenser should be rinsed with water and dried well. It is dishwasher safe and can therefore be cleaned in a dishwasher.
No, you do not need to run water through the coffee machine after each coffee. As soon as your coffee is brewed, the coffee machine is ready for the next preparation.
If the cleaning button, which is already glowing violet, also blinks red during descaling, either too little descaler or rinse water has passed through the machine (depending on the stage of descaling), or there was a power interruption during the process.
If the espresso cup light is also on, the power interruption happened during descaling, and you must start again from step 1 with the full amount of descaler.
If the Lungo button (large cup) is also on, the power interruption happened during rinsing, and you must restart the rinsing process with the full amount of water.
A constant red cleaning light indicates a temperature error. Let the coffee machine warm up or cool down for 30 minutes at room temperature. If the problem persists, the device must be sent for repair.
CoffeeB coffee machines purchased in the CoffeeB webshop or in a Migros or Melectronics store can be taken to any Migros store’s customer service for repair. Machines purchased in a Fust store can be taken to any Fust store for repair.
The cleaning button has three functions:
- Smart-Clean function – quick rinse before or after coffee preparation.
- Descaling function – when descaling is needed, the button glows violet.
- Water level indicator – when the water tank is low, the button glows blue.
Descaler on a chemical basis is the most effective machine descaler. Moreover, it does not damage the machine components.
There are two possibilities of natural descalers: based on vinegar, which could damage the machine components and thus maybe reduce the machine’s longevity. The other natural descaler is based on lemon, which isn’t a very effective descaler, unfortunately.
We are looking for appropriate options on a natural basis. At the moment, there is no alternative equivalent to the chemical solution. In terms of sustainability, the aim is to find a packaging alternative that is more suited to the concept.
Rinse the machine two to five times. If this does not improve the flow, descale the machine. If the flow is still slow afterwards, contact customer service.
The possible dripping is due to the innovative brewing technology. Before brewing starts, the Coffee Ball is fully moistened with water. This can cause a few drops of water to leak before brewing begins. Coffee quality is not affected.
The drip tray has two positions — the upper position is for smaller espresso cups, the lower for larger Lungo cups. The position can be changed by removing the drip tray at an upward angle and reinserting it in the desired position. This adjustable feature improves user convenience and reduces splashing when brewing into smaller cups.
The water used for wetting and washing the Coffee Ball does not flow into the cup, but through a separate outlet into the container. There it is collected in the lower part of the container – beneath the brewed Coffee Balls. This way, the balls within the container do not sit in residual water, preventing mold formation.
The cover serves a hygienic purpose. By closing the lid, you protect the area where the Coffee Ball is inserted for brewing from external influences, such as dust. The lid can always be open or closed – it has no technical function relevant to the brewing process and is not coupled to the lever mechanism. Only during the descaling process must the lid remain closed throughout for safety reasons. The cover is opened or closed using the adjacent button, around which an arrow indicates the direction of rotation.
At CoffeeB, it's important to us to find the most sustainable solution possible for all system components. For the machine, we used as much recycled material as possible, achieving a recycling content of up to 34%. Additionally, it's constructed modularly so that individual components can be specifically replaced.

In principle, it's certainly possible to use the machine in the office, but it's designed for households. The brewing capacity is currently under 30 coffees, so the ball container would need to be emptied intermittently and the water refilled. Nevertheless, there's nothing against offering the machine in the office as well.
After the coffee has been brewed, the lever automatically moves up again. If it gets stuck, the lever can be pushed up again by hand.
If the ball remains visibly stuck in the brewing unit/machine, try pushing the brewed coffee ball down with your finger. If the ball is not clearly visible and is still in the brewing unit, close the lever and press the cleaning button. When the machine has dispensed some liquid, stop the process and the machine will eject the ball. If the ball is still in the brewing unit, scrape out the ball/coffee with your finger or a spoon (Important: Unplug the power cord first). Then close the brewing unit and run the complete cleaning process 1 to 2 times. Coffee dust can be removed with a brush.
Wait until all buttons are lit before closing the lever. If you feel resistance when pushing down or pulling up the lever, do not move it with force.
No, the machine is working perfectly. This noise may come from the magnetic valves in the machine. This is technically normal and gives no cause for concern.RetryClaude can make mistakes. Please double-check responses.
Press one of the buttons and the machine wakes up - after pressing a button, all buttons light up. When the machine is awakened, it immediately begins heating up. The machine can also be automatically awakened by pressing down the lever.
This has been tested. After 4 weeks, there was no mold or other issues. This is therefore possible, but shouldn't happen anyway since the brewing unit automatically opens after brewing (lever automatically goes up).
The machine itself goes into soft-off mode after 1 minute (automatic shutdown after 1 minute). In this mode, it uses only a maximum of 0.2W of energy. For comparison: A 60W light bulb consumes as much energy in 1 hour as the CoffeeB machine in soft-off mode consumes in 12.5 days. An ON/OFF switch is therefore not necessary.
The coffee ball can be reused if it has fallen unused into the ball container, but should be removed from the ball container as quickly as possible or used immediately for coffee preparation. By falling into the ball container, the ball may become slightly wet. As long as the ball is only slightly wet and not damaged, it can be reused. Do not use used coffee balls that have already been pierced/brewed.
Take the dispenser in hand and hold it at a slight angle so that the hole is at the highest point. Place your hand in front of the hole and fill the balls directly from the packaging - by rotating the ball packaging - into the dispenser. The coffee balls do not need to be placed individually into the dispenser, making filling very quick, simple, and hygienic since the coffee balls don't need to be touched by hand. The "Get Started" video shows how to fill the dispenser and it's also illustrated in the Quick Start Guide included with the machine.
Please rinse the machine or prepare a coffee and answer the following questions:
- Does the cup on the cup platform vibrate so strongly that the cup moves on the platform?
- Does the water in the water tank show significant wave movement during machine operation?
If both apply, we recommend calling our customer service - they can help you further. Or bring your machine back to the retailer where you purchased it.
The crema valve in the machine creates small air bubbles during the brewing process. When water flows through the crema valve during rinsing, small bubbles are also created in the rinse water, causing the outflowing rinse water to look milky. The water becomes completely clear again after a short standing time, once all bubbles have escaped.
We have a long-standing collaboration with the world's leading "single portion" machine manufacturer. This Swiss partner has operated a facility in China for decades to competitively manufacture high-quality machines. At CoffeeB, it's important to us to find a sustainable solution for all components of the concept that still offers an attractive and fair price for customers.
Manufacturing the CoffeeB machine in Europe or Switzerland would result in a significantly higher selling price for customers, so we have focused our sustainability efforts for the machine concept on other components. For example, our CoffeeB machine is delivered to Switzerland only by rail or ship, and individual machine components consist of recycled materials or can be recycled again.
The brewing process can only be started with the lever closed (lever down). By pressing down the lever, the brewing unit is closed so that the brewing process, rinsing process, and descaling process can be performed. After completion of the respective process, the lever automatically opens again. During the various processes, the lever must not be manually moved upward.
The coffee ball can simply be pushed/pressed with your finger through the ball chute into the ball receptacle below. Make sure that the ball is removed immediately to prevent it from getting wet and to be able to use it later.
The crema valve in the machine creates small air bubbles during the brewing process. When water flows through the crema valve during rinsing, small air bubbles also form in the rinsing water, which result in an opaque or milky appearance when it leaves the machine. After a short while, the water is clear again as soon as all air bubbles have disappeared.
You can find the operating manual for our Globe coffee machine here: User Manuals
The lever serves to close the brewing unit for the brewing process. It is not connected with the opening and closing mechanism of the ball slot on top of the machine. This mechanism is separate. During the brewing, rinsing and descaling process, the lever must not be moved upwards manually.

Depending on personal taste, the coffee may taste too strong for some, too light for others. That's why we've developed eight different varieties.
If the coffee is too weak for you, you should try our Espresso Forte, with fine notes of cassis, chocolate, and nutmeg. Or do you already know our strong Italian Ristretto?
If you find our varieties too strong, we can recommend our organic Fairtrade varieties BIO Lungo and BIO Espresso.
Alternatively, you can also consider reprogramming the drink length. The latter is very easy and described in your user manual. For the Lungo button, we recommend 100-105ml for more intensity! Between 25ml and 35ml, an espresso becomes very intense.
We have developed eleven different varieties. If you enjoy strong coffee, you should try our Espresso Forte, with fine notes of cassis, chocolate, and nutmeg. Or do you already know our intense Italian Ristretto? The wrapper of the coffee ball consists entirely of raw materials of natural origin, specifically of plant-based and mineral origin. These materials are permitted for use in food and present no health hazards.

3. To open the Coffee Ball packaging, lightly press the tab at the bottom and pull off the top film.

5. Place a suitable cup under the coffee outlet.
6. Gently press the lever down.
7. Select cup size and press the button once. The button begins to blink.

Ideally, coffee grounds and thus our Coffee Ball are disposed of in compost. There, the used Coffee Balls accelerate decomposition, enrich the soil with nutrients, and provide food for earthworms.
Coffee is also good fertilizer for potted plants. Coffee grounds have a low pH value and are therefore particularly suitable for fertilizing plants that need acidic garden soil. The nitrogen in coffee grounds ensures strong leaf growth, phosphorus stimulates flower formation and fruit ripening, potassium is important for cell structure and plant stability. A ratio of 1:10 coffee grounds to plant soil is recommended. Only seedlings don't tolerate caffeine well.
Other suitable disposal methods are through organic waste bins/green waste collection or, if not otherwise possible, conventionally through household waste.
CoffeeB is the world's first capsule system that operates completely without capsules and thus causes no capsule waste whatsoever.
This is made possible by our Coffee Balls, small balls made from pressed coffee, encased in a fine protective layer of natural origin and free from aluminum or (bio-)plastic. The Coffee Ball is thus garden-compostable and can be returned to the natural cycle.
We very much regret that you found broken Coffee Balls. Of course, you can exchange them with us.
Did you purchase your Coffee Balls at a Migros store? Then you have two options: Either exchange the product on-site for new goods or contact our customer service, which will send you either a corresponding replacement delivery or a voucher for our online shop.

You can simply dispose of the entire CoffeeB packaging in cardboard collection.
Should mold formation occur, this is not problematic. The mold contributes to decomposition in compost and is therefore an important component in the composting cycle.
Just like for freshly ground coffee: store the coffee balls after opening the package in a dry place at room or refrigerator temperatures and consume them as quickly as possible.
When you register your CoffeeB machine, you will immediately receive an additional one-year guarantee on your machine and a welcome gift worth CHF 25. You can also obtain exclusive benefits when making future purchases – such as discounts, special offers and gifts.
If the coffee ball has only a small crack on its surface, it can be used without any problems.
However, if the coffee ball has one or more larger tears, it may not be used to prepare coffee.
Using a damaged coffee ball may clog up your machine. Instructions on how to proceed in this case can be found here: Removing_the_coffee_ball.pdf
In the unfortunate though rare event that you find damaged coffee balls in a package, you can have them exchanged free of charge.

All our decaffeinated coffees for our coffee balls are gently decaffeinated using what is known as the CO2 process. This process uses only CO2 gas as well as water to extract the caffeine from the bean. - The unroasted coffee beans are brought into contact with CO2. The CO2 then extracts the caffeine from the beans at high pressure. The CO2 can be used again. What remains behind is the decaffeinated green coffee. Important: no other chemicals such as solvents, etc. are used. This is the most complex but also the gentlest process. The CO2 procedure presents absolutely no health hazards.
Our Coffee Balls are made from the same delicious coffee found in our Cafe Royal capsules.
Especially for short drink lengths, we recommend preheating the machine before each use, before the first brew, for example through a previous rinse cycle with the cleaning button. This way, the brewing chamber is already warmed up and your coffee can be enjoyed nice and hot from the first cup.
We believe the best capsule is no capsule. CoffeeB capsules require neither capsule manufacturing nor waste disposal. This in turn saves additional transportation and processes.
Yes, the coffee balls can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. It’s important that they are stored in a dry place.
The coffee balls are very stable and can be handled like coffee capsules. It is essentially the protective cover that makes the coffee balls stable without producing any unnecessary waste. In fact, the ball can be dropped from the height of a kitchen counter (90 cm) without breaking. Small tears do not have any effect on the preparation of the coffee.
The coffee CoffeeB by Café Royal is delivered by ocean vessel to Antwerp. From there, the coffee is transported by Rhine ship to Basel. To unload the coffee in Basel, the containers are transferred to a truck with a tipping mechanism. CoffeeB production is located in Birsfelden BL. This results in short distances from the port in Basel to the coffee roastery.
Temperature limits for preservation: Optimal: Room temperature 23°C +/- 5°C
Humidity limits for preservation: Optimal:

During Coffee Ball production, deformations, cracks, or other defects on the ball can occur in rare cases. We are working to ensure this visual defect will not occur in the future. However, there are no disadvantages for brewing your coffee or for your taste experience!
During Coffee Ball production, irregularities in the ball skin can occur in rare cases, such as wrinkled spots. We are working to ensure this visual defect will not occur in the future, but there are no disadvantages for brewing your coffee or for your taste experience!
The visible bubbles are trapped air in the shell of our Coffee Balls; there are no disadvantages for brewing your coffee or for your taste experience!
Alginates are considered particularly sustainable and are very popular in the food industry. Not only as an ingredient, for example in baked goods or dairy products, but also to form a natural shell and replace classic plastic materials. We also use alginate to form a shell around the coffee: this gives the coffee ball additional stability and we protect the roasted coffee from aroma loss. Alginates have a natural oxygen barrier that protects the aroma of the Coffee Ball. And don't worry, the alginate we use is taste-neutral, remains as a shell on the brewed ball, and can then be composted with the coffee grounds!
Yes, this is possible by programming the individual cup fill amount, or by manually interrupting when the desired drink amount is reached by pressing the dispensing button again.
Our box has been evaluated for recyclability. The fibers of the box are 93% recyclable – regardless of which waste stream the packaging is thrown into.
Our Coffee Ball is certified as "garden compostable" by the Dincerto Institute and we are not aware that the components of the ball affect plant growth in any way. Generally, coffee grounds have a low pH value and are therefore particularly suitable for fertilizing plants that need acidic soil to thrive.
The protective wrapper is of purely natural origin. Smaller, visual variations are therefore possible. The functionality of the coffee ball is always guaranteed, so you can prepare and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee.
The moulded pulp packaging provides a barrier against oxygen and keeps the coffee in the coffee balls fresh for at least 12 months.
Coffee is a beverage with no significant nutritional value.
You can find the product declaration on each product page of our coffee.
No, the protective wrapper does not dissolve during the extraction process.
For our CoffeeB brand, we have developed a wide range of premium coffees to delight every coffee lover. From balanced Lungo coffee to strong espresso blends, from digestible organic coffee to decaf - our comprehensive range offers the perfect coffee enjoyment for every coffee lover.

The Coffee Ball consists of 100% fresh, ground roasted coffee that is pressed into a ball. To protect the coffee from aroma loss and give it sufficient stability, the ball is surrounded by a shell. This shell consists of raw materials of plant and mineral origin.
The Coffee Ball is surrounded by a thin protective shell of natural origin. Together with the packaging, these provide a barrier against oxygen and thus protect the coffee from oxidation and loss of aroma. A capsule is therefore not necessary.
The coffee balls are labelled by a laser, like the one used to label organic fruit and vegetables. The laser creates a colour change of the protective wrapper around the coffee pellet. This process makes it possible to create a label without using real dyes or damaging the coffee ball (e.g. through engraving). The coating remains intact and forms a natural barrier against oxygen.
No. Our coffee balls consist exclusively of freshly roasted coffee, which is pressed and immediately coated with a thin protective layer (of natural origin) to preserve its freshness and aroma.
The protective wrapper protects the roasted coffee from loss of flavour, and provides the coffee ball with additional stability.
Each Coffee Ball must be moistened with water before brewing so that it becomes soft. This process step takes 17 seconds. The brewing process is extended by this time compared to conventional capsule coffees.
CoffeeB x illy
The illy Espresso Classico Blend embodies a classic velvety taste with delicate notes of caramel, orange blossom, and jasmine. The illy Espresso Intenso is characterized by its intense roasting, delivering captivating hints of cocoa and dried fruits with a full-bodied aftertaste. Perfect for those who prefer an aromatic flavor.
The company illy is B Corp certified. This certification is awarded to organizations committed to upholding the highest standards regarding social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, aiming to optimize impacts on employees, affected communities, and the environment.
CoffeeB by illy is not certified as carbon-neutral.
The coffee is roasted by illy in Italy.
the CoffeeB Balls by illy have the same unmistakable and unique illy aroma as all the other illy products
"Since Italian coffee expertise is associated with a coffee preparation with most intense sensory impact, espresso was chosen as the variety. Classico, with strong floral notes of jasmine and orange blossoms and a pleasantly sweet aftertaste; Intenso, with notes of cocoa and nuts and a full and high-bodied aftertaste. The choice of degree of roasting will depend on your personal preference: For those who prefer a smooth and velvety taste, we recommend the Classico medium roast, whereas those who like a full-bodied taste will find the Intenso roast ideal. "
To fully enjoy the quality, the balls should be consumed within a few weeks after opening the package.
In contrast to the existing Café Royal CoffeeB range, illy uses an intensity scale up to 9 instead of 10. This decision was consciously made to align with illy's well-known intensity scale. The flavor intensity values of the new illy Coffee B products (up to 9, instead of 10) cannot be associated with the values used in the Cafè Royal branded products as the two companies have a different product range
Currently, no further illy varieties are planned. illy wishes to propose the flavor varieties that mostly meet the tastes of a vast range of consumers. We thank you for expressing your suggestion which will be shared with our Product Development Marketing office so that it can consider expanding our product portfolio in the near future.
the illy blend is composed by 9 distinct Arabica coffee origins from our best harvests around the world. In order to be sure to offer the unmistakable and unique illy aroma at every drinking occasion, the 9 qualities of Arabica coffee are blended according to a dynamics receipe that is recalibrated several times a day to ensure the same taste in the cup
