About Us

Delica AG was founded in 2021 through the merger of Chocolat Frey AG, Delica AG, Midor AG, Riseria SA and Total Capsule Solutions. The name Delica stands for the highest possible expertise in great-tasting products under the Migros Industrie umbrella. Delica employs about 2500 people at five locations across Switzerland and many offices abroad. Our company develops and produces delicious top-quality chocolate, snacks, cooking products and coffee.

Migros (short for Migros Cooperative) is one of the largest retail companies in Switzerland. Founded by Gottlieb Duttweiler in 1925, it is now organised as an association of cooperatives with nearly 2.3 million cooperative members. It consists of ten regional cooperatives that together form the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (FMC). A number of subsidiaries and shareholdings are, in turn, controlled by the FMC. Migros Industrie is one of them. Migros Industrie is close to the market, sets trends, and surprises time and again with innovative products and services. Its core competencies include the production of private labels of Swiss quality that it sells in some 50 countries. Well-known international corporate groups are among the customers of Migros Industrie. Migros Industrie is divided into four segments - Delica is Segment 4.

‘CoffeeB is a new, sustainable single-serve coffee system without capsules that offers excellent coffee quality and produces no waste. It works with the unique, single-serve Coffee Balls, which are naturally sourced and compostable in the garden. The quality of the coffee in the cup is guaranteed by the patented brewing technology and the range of high-quality coffees from the Café Royal brand.

Thanks in part to our Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler, Delica stands for innovation, sustainability and Swiss origin. We have been dealing with the issue of capsule waste (100,000 tonnes of capsule waste per year worldwide) for many years. As portioned coffee is becoming increasingly popular in Germany and around the world, capsule waste is also growing. That is why, in parallel with our attempts to maximise the proportion of recycled coffee, we have spent the last five years working on developing a completely waste-free, portioned coffee system. We are proud to have developed CoffeeB in collaboration with our internal R&D department and external partners. An innovative capsule-free system for the highest quality standards, with a plant-based coffee ball that contains no aluminium or plastic.

CoffeeB is the name of the coffee system, the coffee is from Café Royal. Café Royal stands for high-quality, sustainable coffee that our customers know and love. In addition to Café Royal, you can also enjoy coffee from guest brands such as illy in the CoffeeB system. The brand is labelled accordingly on the packaging.

Yes, thanks to our globally unique, patented technology, you can only enjoy Coffee Balls from the CoffeeB coffee machine.

You can find our delicious Coffee Balls and our stylish coffee machines online in our webshop, in many Migros shops and on Migros Online, at Galaxus, Fust and MediaMarkt.

We are convinced that we can offer the best taste experience with our current range in order to fulfil all of our customers' personal coffee expectations. In order to live up to this claim, we are constantly developing our range.

We firmly believe that CoffeeB will substantially change the way in which we drink single-serve coffee in the future. However, this transition will take time. Similar to the car industry, where the transition to electric cars will not take place overnight. In the meantime, we will continue to offer the tried-and-tested quality products to our existing Café Royal and Delizio customers.

We are focussing primarily on the Swiss market as well as Germany, France and Liechtenstein and are constantly evaluating other markets. So a lot will change in the coming years, so keep your eyes peeled!

CoffeeB is for all coffee lovers who appreciate the convenience of capsule systems but are also concerned about the planet. Our consumers are environmentally conscious and would like to eliminate the effects of the aluminium and plastic capsules that are currently used in the most popular single-serve coffee systems.

We aim to offer the world exceptional taste experiences and Swiss quality. This with a focus on the areas of coffee, chocolate, and biscuits. We consider it as our mission to pursue consumer-focused category management, recognise trends, and develop innovations that meet the needs of our valued customers - and to improve continuously.

Sustainability

As most of the footprint comes from the coffee itself, we recommend a preparation method that uses as little coffee as possible or handles the coffee as efficiently as possible. Portion systems generally do this very well. With fully automatic machines, portafilters or filter coffee (e.g. Bialetti/coffee pots), particular care must be taken to ensure that the amount of coffee is kept to a minimum and that the coffee prepared is actually consumed. CoffeeB is guaranteed never to use too much coffee. With 5.7 to 6.2 grams of coffee per cup, the system is extremely efficient and therefore conserves resources. In addition, there is no need for plastics and/or aluminium for the casing and the associated production, disposal and recycling processes.
The Coffee Ball is garden compostable and can be teturned to the natural cycle.

We believe the best capsule is no capsule. CoffeeB capsules require neither capsule manufacturing nor waste disposal. This in turn saves additional transportation and processes.

‘Compared to conventional capsule systems, CoffeeB does not require any aluminium or plastic capsules. All of the Coffee Ball's components are plant and mineral-based and garden-compostable. As a result, CoffeeB can massively reduce aluminium and plastic waste.

Compared to fully automatic machines and portafilters, CoffeeB has the advantage that less coffee is consumed per cup, which reduces the ecological footprint by around 30 %.’

The coffee balls are produced in Switzerland. The ingredients for the protective layer that covers the coffee are of vegetable and mineral origin and are produced in Europe. Our CoffeeB machine is transported to Switzerland exclusively by rail and sea.

As a rule, coffee capsule machines have a service life of 4 years. This means that 20 - 25 % of the population will buy a new coffee machine every year. In the interests of sustainability, we would like to attract these consumers to our CoffeeB system.

Our entire CoffeeB by Café Royal range is certified with the Rainforest Alliance seal, or organic and Fairtrade in combination. Rainforest and Fairtrade in particular place great emphasis on the secure, stable and sustainable income of coffee producers. One focus of the Rainforest Alliance is the improvement of cultivation methods, which should enable a higher income. Producers also receive guaranteed minimum prices and a fixed premium through Fairtrade. They must be organised in cooperatives for this. By covering our entire product range with one of these labels, we want to enable better prices for coffee farmers.

We have had a greenhouse gas balance drawn up by an external consultancy firm. Carbon footprints have to be calculated using many generalised values and assumptions. Especially when comparing with competitors. For this reason, we are not currently distributing the document. However, we are happy to invite relevant stakeholders to a joint discussion. https://youtu.be/aqIAWFjwqD8?feature=shared

All the CoffeeB by Café Royal coffee we source is Rainforest Alliance certified. You can recognize the certification by the little green frog on the packaging. This seal indicates that the certified product or one of its ingredients has been produced using methods that support the three pillars of sustainability - social, economic and environmental. To achieve this, our coffee farmers undergo a rigorous certification program that commits them to continuous improvement, training in sustainable business practices, and a clearly identifiable benefit to the producer.

We use recycled ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) for some of the machine’s parts. This ABS is produced by 85% from post-consumer materials. However, this material is not suitable for all plastic parts.
The housing of the black machine is made from it. As it is only available in black, however, the cover of the white machine cannot be produced using this material. For this reason, the percentage of recycled ABS is substantially lower in the white machine, as can be seen on the packaging. The percentage of recycled plastic is 34% for the black machine and 15% for the white one.

The CoffeeB packaging for our Coffee Balls can be disposed of in the cardboard collection. It is made from FSC-certified natural products such as birch, sawdust and spruce. To ensure shelf life and to protect the balls from oxygen, water vapour and loss of aroma, the packaging is also lined with a barrier layer made of polypropylene. Our cover film, which also serves to protect the flavour of the coffee balls, consists of a composite material made of paper and plastic. The packaging sleeve is made of printed FSC-certified paper with water-based adhesive.

All components of the CoffeeB product packaging can be disposed of together cardboard recycling.

Our ball carton is made from FSC-certified natural products such as birch, sawdust, and spruce. The barrier layer in the box consists of polypropylene and protects the coffee balls from oxygen, steam, and loss of flavour. This guarantees the product’s shelf life. Our cover film, which acts as aroma protection for the coffee balls, consists of composite materials made from paper and plastic. Our banderole consists of printed, FSC-certified paper with water-based glue.

Just like for freshly ground coffee: store the coffee balls after opening the package in a dry place at room or refrigerator temperatures and consume them as quickly as possible.

Our box has been evaluated for recyclability. The box's fibers are 93% recyclable—regardless of which stream the packaging is thrown into.

The moulded pulp packaging provides a barrier against oxygen and keeps the coffee in the coffee balls fresh for at least 14 months.

No, the packaging should be disposed of in waste paper, as this is the best way to recycle it. The cover film can also be disposed of separately in the yellow bin/household rubbish bin.

Machine

The ’Container" signal lights up when the container, which contains the ball and residual water container, needs to be emptied.

Normally, after about nine coffees have been prepared, the container signal starts to flash orange and the coffee machine stops - no more coffee can be prepared. If several cleaning cycles have been carried out, the signal may also light up earlier, as the residual water container is then already too full.

To empty the container, follow the steps below:

1. pull the container for coffee balls and residual water straight forwards out of the machine by the inserted drip tray.
2. remove and empty the container for the coffee balls.
3 Empty the residual water container.
4 Reinsert the drip tray for the coffee balls into the container.
5 Push the container straight back into the opening of the machine.
6. the machine can now be used normally again.
Please note: The container must be removed from the machine for at least 8 seconds to reset the container display.

If the rinse button lights up blue, the water tank is empty. Fill the water tank with fresh water within five minutes.

To refill the water tank:

1. remove the water tank and fill it with water.
2. reinsert the water tank - press it firmly into the holder.
3. close the lever.
4 Press the blue rinse button.
5. does the blue button light up again? Press the blue button again.
6 Coffee is now brewed.
7. all buttons should now light up white again.
If the water tank is not refilled and inserted within five minutes, the brewing unit opens automatically and ejects the coffee ball. If this happens, remove the coffee ball from the ball container immediately. The coffee ball can then continue to be used.

First, remove the container from the coffee machine and dispose of the coffee balls (e.g., in compost or organic waste). Then empty the water from the (main) container and the drip tray. Then reassemble everything and reinsert the container into the machine.

Caution: ONLY the ball container is dishwasher safe! The machine will not work if the container is not in the machine and the container indicator lights up orange. The stainless steel cup rack is not firmly attached to the drip tray and may fall off.

Videos for "Get Started" and "Coffee Preparation" demonstrate how to empty the containers. These can be found on the product page for your machine in our webshop.

If hardly any water comes out of the coffee machine when rinsing or brewing or the lever is blocked, this may indicate that the machine is clogged.

What should I do if the coffee ball gets stuck in the coffee machine?

1. disconnect the machine from the power supply
2. remove the ball container at the front
3. place the cup underneath the coffee dispenser
4. use a torch to check where the ball is jammed
5. carefully push the ball through the machine with a spoon
6. reconnect the machine to the power supply

3. rinse out the water container twice. Fill it and insert it into the machine.
4 Connect the machine to an earthed socket.
5. place a large cup under the coffee dispenser and press the control lever down.
6. press the cleaning button and rinse the machine twice.
7. fill the ball dispenser cleaned with detergent and place it on the machine.
8. the machine is ready for use and you can enjoy your first coffee.

In this video we show you step by step how it works: https://youtu.be/iI92rZ7w3mc

We're pleased you've chosen a CoffeeB machine.

To unpack your machine, follow these steps:

1. Place the box containing your new machine on a flat surface in front of you.
2. Open the two marked tabs at the bottom of the packaging with both hands.
3. Pull the box straight up to unpack the machine.
4. The machine accessories are located underneath the machine.

If two fresh coffee balls have fallen into the ball slot, the brewing unit can still be closed. The first ball is then brewed in the brewing unit. The second ball is pushed slightly upwards and remains in the hole at the top of the closed brewing unit.

If you have a pair of tweezers, you can try to remove it. After the brewing process, the first ball falls into the drip tray/container and the second ball falls into the brewing unit. This can then be used.

If the ball is removed, it can simply be pressed down with your finger so that it falls into the container.

Please note that the ball should be removed immediately so that it does not get wet and can be used at a later time.

If the cleaning button flashes red while brewing a coffee, the coffee machine needs descaling.

To descale your machine, please follow these steps:

1. Fill the water tank with a 0.5 l bottle of CoffeeB descaler. If you are using a different coffee machine descaler, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Caution: Use only descalers for coffee machines and not vinegar or grease removers.
2. Remove the coffee ball dispenser, close the ball inlet cover, and keep it closed until the end of the descaling process.
3. Move the control lever down and keep it closed throughout the descaling process.
4. Press and hold the Lungo (large cup symbol) and cleaning buttons simultaneously for at least 3 seconds.
5. The "Container" indicator flashes red. Remove the coffee ball container for at least 8 seconds. Empty it and replace it. 6. Remove the drip tray by pulling it upwards at an angle. Place a container with a capacity of at least 1 liter under the coffee spout.
7. Press the purple cleaning button. The descaling process now begins. The espresso cup lights up, and the cleaning button flashes during the process. After 25 minutes, the descaling process is complete, and the control lever automatically moves upwards. The cleaning button lights up purple.
8. Rinse the water tank, fill with at least 0.5 liters of water, and reinsert the water tank.
9. Empty your drip tray and place it under the coffee spout again.
10. Push the control lever down and press the cleaning button. The rinsing process now begins. The cleaning button flashes purple, and the lungo button lights up. After three minutes, the rinsing process is complete, and the control lever moves upwards. The "Container" indicator flashes.
11. Remove the waste container for at least 8 seconds. Empty it and reinsert it. The cleaning button lights up blue. Fill the water tank and reinsert it.
12. Press the cleaning button. All buttons light up and the machine is ready for use.
Please note that the descaling process must not be interrupted by unplugging and replugging the power cord. To interrupt the process, press the cleaning and lungo (large cup) buttons simultaneously. If you have already used descaler, ALWAYS rinse with at least 0.5 liters of water.

If the cleaning button lights up red permanently, there is a temperature error. Allow the coffee machine to warm up or cool down for 30 minutes at room temperature. If the problem persists, the appliance must be taken in for repair.

1. you can send us your defective coffee machine directly by post. We will cover the shipping costs. Simply enter the required data under this link, print out the shipping label, stick it on and bring the machine to the post office. https://retour.delicaservice.ch/coffeeb

2 CoffeeB coffee machines purchased in a Migros shop or in the CoffeeB webshop can be handed in to customer service for repair in Migros shops. CoffeeB coffee machines purchased in a Fust or MediaMarkt branch can also be handed in for repair at a Fust or MediaMarkt branch.

Watch our video tutorial to learn how to descale your machine: https://youtu.be/qf834ARacM4

Before first use, the dispenser should be rinsed with water and dried well. It is dishwasher safe and can therefore be cleaned in a dishwasher.

No, you don't need to rinse the coffee maker with water after each coffee. As soon as your coffee has finished brewing, the coffee maker is ready to brew your next cup.

If the cleaning button, which is already lit purple, also flashes red during the descaling process, either too little descaler or rinse water has flowed through the machine, depending on the descaling progress, or a power failure occurred during the process.

If the espresso cup also lights up, the power failure occurred during the descaling process, and you must start the first step of the descaling process again. Important: The full amount of descaler must be used again.

If the lungo cup (large cup) also lights up, the power failure occurred during the rinsing process. The rinsing process must be repeated using the full amount of water.

The cleaning button has three functions:

The Smart Clean function – Quickly rinses the coffee machine after or before making a coffee
The descaling function – When descaling is required, the cleaning button lights up purple
The water level indicator – If the water tank is insufficiently full, the button lights up blue

Descaler on a chemical basis is the most effective machine descaler. Moreover, it does not damage the machine components.

There are two possibilities of natural descalers: based on vinegar, which could damage the machine components and thus maybe reduce the machine’s longevity. The other natural descaler is based on lemon, which isn’t a very effective descaler, unfortunately.

We are looking for appropriate options on a natural basis. At the moment, there is no alternative equivalent to the chemical solution. In terms of sustainability, the aim is to find a packaging alternative that is more suited to the concept.

Rinse the machine two to five times. If there is no improvement, please descale the machine. If coffee dispensing continues to be slow, please contact customer service.

The CoffeeB coffee machine's potential dripping is due to its innovative brewing technology. Before the brewing process begins, the ball is thoroughly moistened with water. As a result, the machine may lose a few drops of water before the coffee is brewed.

However, this does not affect the quality of the coffee.

The drip tray has two positions: the upper one is suitable for slightly smaller espresso cups, the lower one for larger lungo cups. The position can be changed by removing the drip tray at an upward angle and then replacing it in the desired position in the same way. The adjustable position of the drip tray is intended to make the coffee experience more convenient for the consumer and reduce coffee splashing when pouring coffee into smaller cups.

The water used to moisten and rinse the coffee ball doesn't flow into the cup, but rather through a separate outlet into the container. There, it is collected in the lower part of the container—beneath the brewed coffee balls. This way, the coffee balls aren't submerged in the residual water inside the container, preventing the formation of mold.

This function, intended for hygienic reasons, gives a user the possibility to close the lid where the coffee ball is inserted into the machine for brewing. The lid can be open or closed. It has no technical function related to the brewing process, and is not connected to the lever mechanism. An arrow around the button indicates that it can be rotated. The button is the mechanism for opening and closing the lid. The only exception: during descaling, the lid must be closed for safety reasons.

At CoffeeB, it is important to us to find the most sustainable solution possible for all components of the system. We have used as many recycled materials as possible in the machine, achieving a recycling rate of up to 34%. In addition, it has a modular design that allows individual components to be easily replaced.

In principle, it is possible to use the machine in the office, of course, but it is designed for households. The current capacity is less than 30 coffees, so the ball container would have to be emptied and the water refilled occasionally.

Nevertheless, there is nothing to prevent the machine from being offered in the office.

After brewing, the lever moves up again automatically (except on the Horizon, which has a manual lever). If it gets stuck, the lever can be pushed up again manually.

During brewing, rinsing or descaling, and as long as only one of the operating buttons is illuminated, the lever must not be moved upwards manually

If the problem occurs frequently, please return the machine to the point of sale.

If the ball is clearly visible in the brewing unit/machine, try pushing the brewed coffee ball down with your finger. If the ball is not clearly visible and is still in the brewing unit, close the lever and press the cleaning button. Once the machine has dispensed some liquid, stop the process and the machine will eject the ball. If the ball is still in the brewing unit, scrape out the ball/coffee with your finger or a spoon (Important: Unplug the machine first). Then close the brewing unit and repeat the entire cleaning process one or two times. Coffee dust can be removed with a brush.

Before closing the lever, wait until all buttons are illuminated. If you feel resistance when pushing or pulling the lever up, do not force it.

No, the machine is working perfectly. This noise could be caused by the solenoid valves in the machine. This is a technical issue and is nothing to worry about.

Press one of the buttons and the machine will wake up. After pressing a button, all buttons light up. When the machine is woken up, it immediately begins heating. The machine can also be woken up automatically by pressing the lever down.

This was tested. After four weeks, there was no mold or anything else. So, this is possible, but it shouldn't happen anyway, since the brewing unit opens automatically after brewing (the lever automatically goes up).

The machine itself goes into soft-off mode (automatic shutdown after 1 minute). It only consumes a maximum of 0.2W of energy.

For comparison: A 60W light bulb consumes the same amount of energy in 1 hour as the CoffeeB machine consumes in 12.5 days in soft-off mode. An on/off switch is therefore not required.

The coffee ball can be reused if it falls unused into the ball container, but it should be removed from the ball container as soon as possible or immediately used for brewing coffee. Falling into the ball container may cause the ball to become slightly wet. As long as the ball is only slightly wet and not damaged, it can be reused. Do not use used coffee balls if they have already been punctured/brewed.

Hold the dispenser in your hand and hold it at a slight angle so that the hole is at the highest point. Place your hand over the hole and fill the coffee balls directly from the packaging into the dispenser by turning the packaging. The coffee balls don't need to be placed individually into the dispenser, making filling very quick, easy, and hygienic, as you don't have to touch the coffee balls. The "Get Started" video shows how to fill the dispenser, and it's explained again with pictures in the Quick Start Guide included with the machine. https://youtu.be/iI92rZ7w3mc

Please rinse the machine or prepare a coffee and answer the following questions:

The cup on the cup rest vibrates so strongly that it moves around the rest?

Does the water in the water tank exhibit a noticeable wave motion while the machine is running?

If both of these apply, we recommend you call our customer service department – they can help you. Or return your machine to the retailer where you purchased it.

The crema valve in the machine creates small air bubbles during the brewing process. When the water flows through the crema valve during the rinsing process, small bubbles are also created in the rinse water, causing the dispensing rinse water to appear milky. The water will become completely clear again after a short standing time, once all the bubbles have dissipated.

We have a long-standing collaboration with the world's leading single-serve coffee machine manufacturer. This Swiss partner has operated a factory in China for decades to produce high-quality machines competitively. At CoffeeB, it's important to us to find a sustainable solution for all components of the concept, while still offering an attractive and fair price for the customer.

Manufacturing the CoffeeB machine in Europe or Switzerland would result in a considerably higher sales price for the customer, so we have shifted our sustainability focus to other components of the machine concept. For example, our CoffeeB machine is only delivered to Switzerland by rail or ship, and individual components of the machine are made of recycled materials or can be recycled.

The brewing process can only be started with the lever closed (lever down). Pushing the lever down closes the brewing unit so that the brewing process, rinsing process, and descaling can be performed. Once each process is complete, the lever automatically reopens. The lever must not be manually raised during the various processes.

The coffee ball can simply be pushed/pressed with your finger through the ball chute into the ball receptacle below. Make sure that the ball is removed immediately to prevent it from getting wet and to be able to use it later.

Here you will find the user manuals for our coffee machines: https://www.coffeeb.ch/en/pages/usermanual

The lever serves to close the brewing unit for the brewing process. It is not connected with the opening and closing mechanism of the ball slot on top of the machine. This mechanism is separate.

During the brewing, rinsing and descaling process, the lever must not be moved upwards manually.

The coffee machines differ primarily in their appearance. Here are the main unique features in terms of function:

Horizon: the latest generation in trendy colours with extendable cup size and manual lever

Globe: the original in the latest design

Cosmos: the Crema della Crema with height-adjustable spout and larger tank volume

If the cleaning button lights up blue, the water tank is empty. The water tank must then be filled with fresh water within 5 minutes. As soon as the tank is filled and placed on the machine, please confirm this by pressing the cleaning button. If the water tank is not filled within 5 minutes, the brewing unit opens automatically and ejects the ball. This means that if the water tank is empty, the user has 5 minutes to refill it and continue the brewing process. The ball is not lost and can still be used. The machine completes the brewing process for the ball.
Attention: If the coffee ball has already been punctured, it may no longer be used.

Before the percolation process, each coffee ball must be moistened with water to soften it. This step takes 17 seconds. The rest of the time your coffee is brewed.

To make a coffee with our CoffeeB machine, ensure that there is enough water in the water tank. You will also need a pack of Coffee Balls and a suitable coffee cup.

1. You can flush the machine once to warm it up if you need to. Place a cup under the coffee spout before doing this.
2. Open the cover above the ball slot if it is closed.
3. To open the Coffee Ball packaging, lightly press in the tab at the bottom and remove the covering film.
4. Remove a Coffee Ball and insert it into the ball slot. Alternatively, you can insert the entire pack of Coffee Balls into the Coffee Ball dispenser. Then close the dispenser and place it onto the machine.
5. Place a suitable cup under the coffee spout.
6. Gently push the lever downwards.
7. Select your cup size and press the button once. The button starts flashing.
8. The coffee will start to flow out of the spout after a few seconds
9. Enjoy CoffeeB.

Yes, this is possible by programming the individual cup filling quantity or by manually interrupting the brewing process by pressing the dispensing button again when the desired beverage quantity is reached.

Coffeeball

We have developed 13 different flavours. If you like strong coffee, you should try our Espresso Forte, with subtle notes of cassis, chocolate and nutmeg. Or are you already familiar with our intense Italian Ristretto? If you prefer milder blends, then we can recommend our Espresso and Lungo, as well as our organic Fairtrade varieties BIO Lungo and BIO Espresso for conscious enjoyment. Our Decaffeinato, a decaffeinated blend, is also perfect if you want to enjoy a coffee-free coffee. Flavoured coffee fans will also get their money's worth with our Caramel and Hazelnut varieties. Our CoffeeB x illy Espresso Classico and Intenso round off the assortment.

The protective layer of our coffee balls is completely plant-based. One of the main ingredients is alginate. Alginates are considered to be particularly sustainable and are widely used in the food industry - not only as an ingredient, for example in baked goods or dairy products, but also to form a natural film to replace traditional synthetic materials. Thanks to its properties, we use alginate to form a coating around the coffee: This stabilises the coffee ball and protects the roasted coffee from flavour loss. In fact, alginates are a natural barrier against oxygen, which protects the flavour. The alginate we use is neutral in flavour, sticks to the infused coffee ball and can ultimately be composted together with the coffee grounds. The coffee ball is free from allergens.

Ideally, coffee grounds, including our Coffee Ball, should be disposed of in the compost. There, the used Coffee Balls accelerate decomposition, enrich the soil with nutrients, and provide food for earthworms.

Coffee is also a good fertilizer for potted plants. Coffee grounds have a low pH and are therefore particularly suitable for fertilizing plants that require acidic garden soil. The nitrogen in the coffee grounds promotes strong leaf growth, phosphorus stimulates flowering and fruit ripening, and potassium is important for cell development and plant stability. A ratio of 1:10 coffee grounds to potting soil is recommended. Only seedlings do not tolerate caffeine well.

Other suitable disposal methods include the organic waste bin/green waste collection system or, if no other option is available, conventional disposal with household waste.

We are very sorry that you found broken Coffee Balls. Of course, you can exchange them with us.

If mold does form, it's not a problem. Mold contributes to the decomposition of compost and is therefore an important part of the composting cycle.

The coffee ball is bathed in 72 degree water before the coffee is being extracted. This water does not land in your cup, but is being transferred into the bin. In addition, the coating does not dissolve during extraction. The water runs through the coffee ball.

If the coffee ball only has a small crack in the surface, it can be used without any problems.

If the coffee ball has one or more larger cracks, it must not be used to make coffee, otherwise the machine could clog.

If you do find damaged coffee balls in the packaging, you can have them replaced free of charge.

The CoffeeB by Café Royal varieties are produced in our production facility in Birsfelden.

Especially for shorter beverages, we recommend preheating the machine once before each use, for example, by rinsing it with the cleaning button. This ensures the brewing chamber is already warmed up, and your coffee will be nice and hot from the very first cup.

Yes, the coffee balls can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. It’s important that they are stored in a dry place.

The Coffee Balls are very stable and can be handled like normal coffee capsules. Their protective cover makes the Coffee Balls stable without producing unnecessary waste. Nevertheless, you should not put unnecessary strain on them. Minor cracks have no effect on the preparation of the coffee, but you can no longer use broken balls.

C limits for preservation:
Optimal: Room temperature 23°C +/- 5°C

Hydrometric limit for preservation:
Optimal: < / = 50% RH

Light exposure limit:
Before opening the box: no light exposure limits. After opening the box: no light exposure limits if balls are used within a few weeks. For longer storage: avoid light by storing the ball in a (closed, opaque) container.

During production, deformations, cracks, or other defects may occur in the coffee ball in rare cases. We are working to prevent this visual defect from occurring in the future. However, this will not adversely affect your coffee experience or your coffee quality!

The visible bubbles are trapped air in the shell of our coffee balls; there are no disadvantages when it comes to your coffee or your taste experience!

Alginates are considered particularly sustainable and are widely used in the food industry. They're used not only as an ingredient, e.g., in baked goods or dairy products, but also to form a natural shell, replacing traditional plastic materials. We also use alginate to form a shell around the coffee: this gives the coffee ball additional stability and protects the roasted coffee from aroma loss. Alginates have a natural oxygen barrier that protects the aroma of the coffee ball. And don't worry, the alginate we use is tasteless, remains as a shell on the brewed ball, and can then be composted with the coffee grounds!

Our coffee ball is certified as “compostable” by the DINcerto institute (TÜV). We are not aware of any parts of the ball having an effect on the growth of plants. In principle, coffee grounds have a low pH level. They are therefore especially useful to fertilise plants that need acid soil to thrive.

Coffee is a beverage with no significant nutritional value.

You can find the product declaration on every product page of our coffee

No, the protective wrapper does not dissolve during the extraction process.

The Coffee Ball is made from 100% fresh, ground roasted coffee, pressed into a ball. To protect the coffee from loss of aroma and provide sufficient stability, the ball is encased in a shell made from raw materials of plant and mineral origin.

The Coffee Ball is surrounded by a thin protective shell of natural origin. Together with the packaging, these provide a barrier against oxygen and thus protect the coffee from oxidation and loss of aroma. A capsule is therefore not necessary.

The coffee balls are labelled by a laser, like the one used to label organic fruit and vegetables. The laser creates a colour change of the protective wrapper around the coffee pellet. This process makes it possible to create a label without using real dyes or damaging the coffee ball (e.g. through engraving). The coating remains intact and forms a natural barrier against oxygen.

The protective wrapper protects the roasted coffee from loss of flavour, and provides the coffee ball with additional stability.

Our Coffee Balls contain 5.7-6.2g of coffee, depending on the variety.

The wrapping of our coffee balls has no taste. It provides a perfect natural barrier against oxygen, preventing loss of aroma without compromising the flavour of the coffee.

The wrapper is not consumed and remains in the coffee machine on the ball after extraction, like a paper filter in a single-serve coffee pad. In a sense, the wrapper acts like packaging.

This can actually occur in rare cases. This is crystallised caffeine. The hairs have no influence on the quality of the coffee and are absolutely harmless to health

The reason for flocculation is the pH difference between coffee and plant-based milk. Our coffee is of the highest Arabica quality and therefore has a very low pH value. Many of the plant-based milk alternatives have a high pH.
Try the Ristretto and Espresso Forte varieties. They have a proportion of Robusta in the recipe and are therefore less acidic.
Alternatively, you can also use plant-based ‘barista’ milk. This should also work.

No. Our coffee balls consist exclusively of freshly roasted coffee, which is pressed and immediately coated with a thin protective layer (of natural origin) to preserve its freshness and aroma.

For our CoffeeB by Café Royal coffee, we use coffees from: Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Colombia, Vietnam, Peru & Kenya. The coffee comes from Rainforest Alliance certified plantations.

CoffeeB by Café Royal coffee is delivered by ocean-going vessel to Antwerp. From there, the coffee is transported by Rhine barge to Basel. To unload the coffee in Basel, the containers are transferred to a truck with a tipping device. CoffeeB's production facility is located in Birsfelden, Canton of Basel-Landschaft. This results in short distances from the port in Basel to the coffee roastery.

All our decaffeinated coffees for our coffee balls are gently decaffeinated using what is known as the CO2 process. This process uses only CO2 gas as well as water to extract the caffeine from the bean. - The unroasted coffee beans are brought into contact with CO2. The CO2 then extracts the caffeine from the beans at high pressure. The CO2 can be used again. What remains behind is the decaffeinated green coffee. Important: no other chemicals such as solvents, etc. are used. This is the most complex but also the gentlest process. The CO2 procedure presents absolutely no health hazards.

We have developed a large selection of premium coffees for our CoffeeB brand to satisfy all coffee lovers. From balanced lungo and full-bodied espresso blends to organic, decaffeinated and flavoured coffees, our extensive range offers all coffee lovers maximum enjoyment.

Our CoffeeB by Café Royal Coffee Balls are made from the same delicious, 100% Rainforest Alliance certified coffee as our Café Royal capsules.

Depending on personal taste, the coffee may taste too strong for some, too light for others. We've developed eight different varieties for this purpose.

If the coffee is too weak for you, you should try our Espresso Forte, with delicate notes of cassis, chocolate, and nutmeg. Or are you already familiar with our robust Italian Ristretto?

If you find our varieties too strong, we recommend our organic Fairtrade varieties BIO Lungo and BIO Espresso.

Alternatively, you can also consider reprogramming the drink length. The latter is very easy and described in your user manual. For the Lungo button, we recommend 100-105ml for more intensity! Between 25ml and 35ml, an espresso becomes very intense.

We recommend rinsing the machine once with water after a flavoured coffee has been extracted. You don't need to put a ball in it. All you have to do is press down the lever and press any button. The machine is then rinsed once with water. Don't forget to put a cup underneath :)

Yes, our natural flavouring is free from allergens.

We use natural flavouring for our flavoured varieties. This is often a little less intense than artificial flavouring. A sip of milk often helps to emphasise the sweetness (tastes great!). Otherwise, a little bit of sugar certainly helps :)

We mix powdered flavouring into our ground coffee blends before we press the balls. This is a high-quality, natural flavouring. You can see it in the extracted balls in the form of small white dots.

The company illy is B Corp certified. This certification is awarded to organizations committed to upholding the highest standards regarding social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, aiming to optimize impacts on employees, affected communities, and the environment.

The coffee is roasted by illy in Italy.

the CoffeeB Balls by illy have the same unmistakable and unique illy aroma as all the other illy products

As Italian coffee expertise is associated with a preparation that leaves the most intense sensory impression, espresso was chosen as the variant. But you can also extract lungos with it and see if you like it. And maybe there's more to come... stay tuned.

In contrast to the existing Café Royal CoffeeB range, illy uses an intensity scale up to 9 instead of 10. This decision was consciously made to align with illy's well-known intensity scale. The flavor intensity values of the new illy Coffee B products (up to 9, instead of 10) cannot be associated with the values used in the Cafè Royal branded products as the two companies have a different product range
